About Mateo Robles
The author was born in Honduras and spent his teenage years there during the period in which Flower Girls is set, witnessing firsthand many of the social and political currents that shaped the country during those years.
He later moved to the United States to attend college and pursued a technical career while continuing to explore creative work through graphic design, photography, video, and motion graphics. Those visual disciplines have strongly influenced the way he approaches storytelling.
Flower Girls, his first novel, grew from family stories, remembered conversations, personal experiences, neighborhood rumors, and fragments of history that gradually began to form a larger narrative. A piece of his heart remains in Honduras, a place he remembers as beautiful and wounded, tender and cruel, impossible to explain, and impossible to leave behind.
A lifelong admirer of visual storytelling, he writes about lost innocence, moral compromise, regret, and the difficult possibility of redemption. He believes a story can leave room for hope without resolving every mystery. His characters are shaped by what they do, what they conceal, and what they cannot bring themselves to explain. Rather than tell readers what to feel, he prefers to let them fall in love with the mystery.
