Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Camila has survived an orphan’s poverty in 1984 Honduras by taking ordinary things apart and learning how they work. When a homemade explosive brings her to a police station, an intelligence officer known as X offers the education she craves, money for her guardians, and a future beyond selling tortillas. The price is that her talent will belong to him.

At Fort Bragg, specialists teach Camila English, tradecraft, weapons, and disciplined explosives work. They also give her a new name: Charlie. Camila loves the knowledge and control it offers, even as her new identity makes her useful to a covert system that will not let her leave.

Vicente, a quiet butcher coerced into the same network after killing to protect a neighborhood girl, recognizes the trap because he lives inside it too. Joint operations turn mutual respect into love while binding them to clandestine traffic among Honduran officers, Contra forces, weapons, narcotics, and American interests.

Then Camila’s timed bomb kills its target along with a flower seller and her two daughters. Officials call the deaths collateral damage. Camila sees the child she once was and understands that precision cannot make her work clean.

As Camila’s loyalties shift and the cost of obedience becomes impossible to ignore, she and Vicente begin imagining a life beyond the network. But X has built his operatives to be useful, not free. To escape, Camila must decide how much she is willing to risk against the mentor who knows every skill, secret, and weakness he taught her.
